Robin Day, Festival of Britain

The Festival of Britain in 1951 firmly established the professional reputations of Robin and Lucienne Day. Robin was given the opportunity of a lifetime when he was commissioned to design the seating for the newly-built Royal Festival Hall. His friend Peter Moro was in charge of the interiors. The commission included not only the auditorium seating for the main concert hall, constructed using steel fabrication techniques co-opted from the car industry, but an innovative range of lounge and dining chairs for the foyers and restaurant.

These chairs - fabricated from moulded plywood and steel rod (a revolutionary combination of materials at the time) - were also prominently displayed in two room settings created by Robin for the Homes and Gardens Pavilion, alongside his custom-designed storage systems. Robin also co-designed the signage used throughout the Festival site, and created an eye-catching poster for the Exhibition of Science.
